Why did Alcatraz shut down?
Located in San Francisco, California, Alcatraz was best known for holding famous prisoners like Al Capone and Machine Gun Kelly. It was also known as one of the most secure prisons because of its location. The prison is surrounded by frigid water and is a long swim to the shore, making it incredibly difficult, but not impossible, to escape.
Its isolated condition and sprawling facility are also a big part of why Alcatraz was shut down. The expenses necessary to keep staff and supplies on the island were too high. Alcatraz was shut down because it was too expensive compared to other prisons that did the same job for less money.
