How Do Bail Bonds Work?

A bail bond is a service fee for putting up bail money to a court in order to allow you to get out of jail until your court date. The court will set a bail amount for you, if it is more than you can afford and you don’t want yourself or your loved one to remain in jail until that court date, then you need to talk to a bail bonds company who will put the money up on your behalf.

About

What Happens If I Am An Indemnitor (Co-Signer) For A Bail Bond?

Co-signing for a bail bond means you are taking legal responsibility for the full amount of the bail bond. So if the court said the bail bond was $10,000, and the bail bondsman is asking you to pay $1,000 to them as their service fee, and the person skips out and runs from the appointed court date, the bondsman will come after you to get the money they put up to the court, which means you owe the full $10,000.

Was Someone You Know Arrested In Augusta, KS?

If they were arrested in Augusta, they are in Butler County custody at the Butler County Adult Detention Facility, 701 S Stone Rd in El Dorado, not the Sedgwick County jail in Wichita. Butler County has no online inmate search, so you cannot look this up yourself. Call (316) 833-8506 and we will find out where they are and what the bond is.

Where someone arrested in Augusta is taken

Augusta is in Butler County. Someone arrested here is taken to the Butler County Adult Detention Facility at 701 S Stone Rd in El Dorado, not to anywhere in Augusta and not to Wichita. The jail reception line is (316) 322-4160.

Augusta is also unusual in how it polices. The city runs a combined Department of Public Safety at 2100 N Ohio, where officers are cross trained as firefighters. The non-emergency line is (316) 775-4500, staffed around the clock.

Butler County has no online inmate search

This is the practical difference that catches Augusta families out, especially anyone used to Wichita. Sedgwick County publishes a free inmate search anyone can use from a phone at any hour. Butler County does not.

Butler County posts dated PDF rosters on the Sheriff’s website instead, and not every day. Recent postings were several days apart, and only about six dates stay live at a time. If your person was booked last night, there is a real chance they are on no published list at all.

That leaves calling. We do it every day and it costs you nothing to ask.

Augusta Municipal Court or Butler County District Court

Which court has the case decides where the bond gets posted and when the first appearance happens.

Augusta Municipal Court handles violations of Augusta city ordinances committed inside city limits, mostly traffic and lower level offenses charged under city code. There is no jury. A judge decides the case. The court is housed in the Public Safety building at 2100 N Ohio St, Augusta, KS 67010, phone (316) 775-4500 extension 105.

Butler County District Court handles anything charged under Kansas state law, which means every felony and the state misdemeanors. That court is at 201 W Pine, Suite 101, El Dorado, KS 67042, phone (316) 322-4370. Butler County is part of the 13th Judicial District along with Elk and Greenwood counties. A felony is never handled in municipal court.

What happens at an Augusta first appearance

Augusta publishes more about its process than most cities, and it is worth knowing.

The first appearance docket begins at 2:00 p.m. The courtroom opens at 12:50 p.m. on court days and there is a sign in sheet posted outside the door. When your name is called you can enter a plea of not guilty, no contest or guilty, say you have already hired a lawyer, ask for time to find one, apply for an appointed attorney, ask to speak with the prosecutor, or ask for a trial. The judge cannot give you legal advice.

One detail that genuinely matters: at the first appearance stage, the Augusta prosecutor has the authority to amend, divert or dismiss a charge. That is a real window, and it is easier to use when your person is standing there having slept at home rather than appearing from a cell in El Dorado.

Failure to reappear can result in a warrant. For payments, the clerk’s office accepts only cash, money orders and personal checks in person, with card payments handled online or by phone.

Getting mail to someone in the Butler County jail

Personal mail for a Butler County inmate does not go to the jail in El Dorado. It goes to a scanning service in Texas: Inmate Name, Butler County Detention Facility, PO Box 591, Longview, TX 75606. The letter is scanned, delivered electronically to a kiosk in the inmate’s cell, and the physical letter is destroyed and never returned. Five pages maximum, one photo per mailing, front side only, with the inmate’s name and booking number on it.

Legal mail is the exception. As of June 18, 2026, legal mail goes directly to Butler County Detention Center, 701 S Stone Rd, El Dorado, KS 67042. Sending legal mail to Texas is a mistake that can hurt a case.
