How Do Bail Bonds Work?

A bail bond is a service fee for putting up bail money to a court in order to allow you to get out of jail until your court date. The court will set a bail amount for you, if it is more than you can afford and you don’t want yourself or your loved one to remain in jail until that court date, then you need to talk to a bail bonds company who will put the money up on your behalf.

About

What Happens If I Am An Indemnitor (Co-Signer) For A Bail Bond?

Co-signing for a bail bond means you are taking legal responsibility for the full amount of the bail bond. So if the court said the bail bond was $10,000, and the bail bondsman is asking you to pay $1,000 to them as their service fee, and the person skips out and runs from the appointed court date, the bondsman will come after you to get the money they put up to the court, which means you owe the full $10,000.

Bail Bonds in Mulvane, KS

Mulvane is the one town in our service area where the first question is not how much is the bond. It is which county is your person even in.

Mulvane sits on the line between Sedgwick County and Sumner County. Main Street follows part of that county line, and the center of town is roughly five miles west of the point where Sedgwick, Sumner, Butler and Cowley counties all meet. That means two people arrested a few blocks apart in Mulvane can end up in two different jails, in two different counties, in front of two different judges.

We are a Wichita bail bond company. Our office is at 700 N Market St, Ste 1 and it is staffed around the clock. We do not have an office in Mulvane. We drive out and post the bond in person, and because we work both Sedgwick County and Sumner County we can handle a Mulvane case whichever side of the line it landed on. Call (316) 833-8506 and we will find out where your person actually is before you drive anywhere.

Which jail your person is in

Mulvane does not run a long term jail of its own. Where someone goes after a Mulvane arrest depends on which agency made the arrest and which county the arrest happened in.

  • Sedgwick County side. Bookings go to the Sedgwick County Adult Detention Facility at 141 W Elm, Wichita, KS 67203. This is the big downtown Wichita jail. It is a short drive from our office, which is part of why we can move quickly on these.
  • Sumner County side. Bookings go to the Sumner County Detention Center at 610 E Hillside, Wellington, KS 67152. The jail line is 620-326-8943 and the Sumner County Sheriff’s Office is 620-326-8941. Wellington is a drive south, not a trip across town.

If you are calling jails yourself and getting nowhere, that split is usually why. Call us instead. Locating someone is the part we do first and we do not charge for it.

Mulvane Police Department and Mulvane Municipal Court

City charges, meaning city ordinance violations and city traffic tickets written by Mulvane officers, stay in Mulvane and go to Mulvane Municipal Court. Both the police department and the court are in the same building at 410 E Main, Mulvane, KS 67110.

  • Mulvane Police Department: 410 E Main. Main line 316-777-4262, records 316-777-1111. Office hours Monday through Friday, 8 a.m. to 4 p.m.
  • Mulvane Municipal Court: 410 E Main. Court office 316-351-7205. The court clerk is Amber Roper at 316-777-9515. Clerk’s office hours are Monday through Friday, 8 a.m. to 5 p.m.
  • Court schedule: the city states that Mulvane Municipal Court meets on the first, third and fourth Tuesday of each month beginning at 1:30 p.m., and that trials are held on the fourth Tuesday at 1:30 p.m.
  • Mulvane City Hall: 211 N 2nd Ave, Mulvane, KS 67110, 316-777-1143.

That court calendar is worth paying attention to. A municipal court that sits three afternoons a month is not going to squeeze your person in tomorrow. If they are in custody on a city charge, the bond is what gets them home before that next Tuesday docket.

Which district court hears a bigger case

Felonies and county filed misdemeanors do not stay in municipal court. They go to the district court for whichever county the case was filed in.

  • Sedgwick County District Court sits in Wichita and is part of the 18th Judicial District.
  • Sumner County District Court is in the Sumner County Courthouse at 501 N Washington Ave, Wellington, KS 67152, reachable at 620-326-5936. Sumner County is part of the 30th Judicial District, which also covers Barber, Harper, Kingman and Pratt counties.

Same town, same night, two completely different court systems. This is the single most common source of confusion we hear from Mulvane families, and it is the reason we ask for the arresting agency before anything else.

How a Mulvane bond actually goes

  • You call, we locate. Full legal name and date of birth if you have it. We check both the Sedgwick County and Sumner County sides so you are not calling around yourself.
  • We confirm the bond and the charge. If booking is not finished, the bond may not be set yet. We will tell you that straight instead of pretending otherwise.
  • We go over the numbers before you commit. Fee, down payment, balance, in writing.
  • Paperwork. Most of it can be signed electronically. If you would rather do it face to face, we come to you.
  • A bondsman posts the bond in person at whichever facility your person is in.
  • The jail handles release. After the bond is posted the timing belongs to the jail. It is usually reasonably quick, but a shift change or a backed up booking area can stretch it out, and no honest bondsman will promise you a minute count.

What to have ready when you call

  • Full legal name as it appears on their ID, and date of birth
  • Which agency arrested them: Mulvane Police, Sedgwick County Sheriff, Sumner County Sheriff, or the Kansas Highway Patrol
  • The bond amount if it has been set
  • Your ID, your address, and how long you have lived there
  • Where you work and a daytime number
  • One more person who knows your person and can reach them

Missing some of it is fine. Call anyway and we will start working while you track the rest down.

What it costs

The court sets the bond. We charge a percentage of that amount as our fee, and in most situations we can start with a down payment rather than the full fee up front. The exact terms depend on the bond amount, the charge and the county the case is in, which is a real factor in Mulvane because a Sedgwick County case and a Sumner County case are not governed by the same local court rules. We quote you on the phone rather than posting one number that may not apply to your case.

The fee is payment for the service of posting the bond. It is not a deposit and it does not come back at the end of the case. That is true of every bail bond company in Kansas, and any company telling you different is selling you something.

If you are thinking about co-signing

Co-signing means you are on the hook for the full bond amount if your person does not show up to court. Before you sign, ask yourself honestly whether they will make their court dates and whether you will be able to stay in touch with them until the case wraps up. In our experience most problems are not people running. They are people losing track of a date. If you co-sign, put every court date in your phone and make sure they get there.
