Wichita Bonding Co. has some of the best bondsmen in the industry working with us. Our office is at 700 N Market St in Wichita and we cover Derby and all of Sedgwick County. We are not here just to provide a service and make money. We actually care about the people who call us, usually on the worst night they have had in a long time.
If someone you care about was picked up in Derby, there are two things that decide what happens next: where they are being held, and which court has their case. Those are the first two things we sort out when you call.
We make it easy for you. Let us handle the court and paperwork so you don’t have to.
Open 24/7. We’ll even come and pick you up in Derby if you need us to.
A bail bond is a service fee for putting up bail money to a court in order to allow you to get out of jail until your court date. The court will set a bail amount for you, if it is more than you can afford and you don’t want yourself or your loved one to remain in jail until that court date, then you need to talk to a bail bonds company who will put the money up on your behalf.
Co-signing for a bail bond means you are taking legal responsibility for the full amount of the bail bond. So if the court said the bail bond was $10,000, and the bail bondsman is asking you to pay $1,000 to them as their service fee, and the person skips out and runs from the appointed court date, the bondsman will come after you to get the money they put up to the court, which means you owe the full $10,000.
If they were arrested in Derby, they are almost certainly at the Sedgwick County Adult Detention Facility at 141 W Elm St in Wichita, not anywhere in Derby. Our office is at 700 N Market St, a short drive from that building. Call (316) 833-8506 and we will confirm where they are and what the bond is, then a bondsman comes to you.
Derby does not run its own jail. The Sedgwick County Sheriff’s Office books people for every city in Sedgwick County, so in most cases someone arrested by Derby police is taken to the Sedgwick County Adult Detention Facility at 141 W Elm St in Wichita. The jail’s main line is (316) 660-5245.
There is one Derby detail worth knowing, and most bail bonds pages get it wrong. Derby police do not send everyone to the county jail. Their own published arrest reports show three different outcomes: booked into the Sedgwick County jail, released from the station on bond, or released directly to Derby Municipal Court. Which one applies depends on the charge. If you are not sure which happened to your person, call us and we will find out.
This is the part most families get wrong, and it matters, because it decides where the bond gets posted and when the first appearance happens.
Derby Municipal Court handles violations of Derby city ordinances committed inside city limits. That is mostly traffic and lower level offenses charged under city code. There is no jury in municipal court. A judge decides the case. The court is at 229 N Baltimore, Derby, KS 67037, phone (316) 788-1511. Derby Police are in the same building, non-emergency line (316) 788-1557.
Sedgwick County District Court handles anything charged under Kansas state law, which means every felony and the state misdemeanors. That court is at 525 N Main St in Wichita, phone (316) 660-5900. A felony is never handled in municipal court.
Derby Municipal Court runs on Thursdays. Arraignments are at 9:00 a.m., video arraignments are at 12:30 p.m., and trials and other matters are at 2:00 p.m. The 12:30 p.m. video docket is the one that matters when your person is still in custody, because that is when they appear from the jail instead of in person.
That schedule is worth understanding. If someone is arrested on a Friday on a city charge, the next Derby docket is not until the following Thursday. Posting bond is what gets them home in the meantime instead of sitting through the weekend and most of a week.
Sedgwick County publishes a free public inmate search, and you can look someone up yourself without paying anyone. It can take a few hours after an arrest before a name shows up. If you cannot find them yet, that usually means booking is not finished, not that they are somewhere else.
The Sedgwick County jail takes three kinds of bond: cash only, release on a person’s own recognizance when a judge grants it, and a professional surety bond, which is the kind we post.
Two things are worth knowing before you drive to the jail with cash. A cash bond over $10,000 requires photo identification and IRS reporting paperwork. And the Sheriff’s Office cannot refund a cash bond once it has been posted, because the court that receives the money decides what happens to it, not the jail and not you.
That second point is why a lot of families call a bondsman instead of emptying a savings account at the jail window.
Our office is in Wichita, not in Derby, and that is not a drawback. One of our bondsmen will come to you. Being minutes from the Sedgwick County jail is the part that actually matters here, because that is where the paperwork gets posted and where your person walks out.
We answer the phone 24 hours a day. Call (316) 833-8506 and we will tell you where they are, what the bond is, and exactly what it will cost you before you agree to anything.
